Do This Before You Turn on Your AC This Spring

Air Conditioner

Spring is here and that means you’ll be using your AC system soon. In addition to scheduling AC maintenance with our team, there are some DIY tasks you can complete to make sure your air conditioner will be ready to handle the upcoming cooling season.

Not only will completing these tasks make sure your AC system lasts for the season, but it’s also the best way to prevent unexpected air conditioning repair in Keedysville. That’s because a well-maintained AC is one that’s less prone to breaking down. Here are 5 essential things to do before turning on your AC.

1. Clean or Replace Air Filters

This should always be done before you start using your AC. Replacing the air filter in a timely manner throughout the cooling season provides these benefits:

  • Maximizes airflow through the AC for optimal cooling
  • Extends the lifespan of your AC system
  • Change every 1–3 months for maximum benefits

2. Schedule Maintenance With Our Super Techs

This is the best thing you can do to make sure your AC starts off the cooling season strong. Scheduling AC maintenance provides a plethora of benefits that include:

  • Increased AC performance
  • Lower cooling bills
  • Stronger cooling power
  • Less likelihood of a breakdown
  • Reduced risk of repair needs
  • Increased likelihood of a 10–15 year AC lifespan

3. Inspect the Outdoor Unit

Over the winter, your HVAC system’s outdoor unit can become obstructed by debris. Check it for the following:

  • Leaves, branches, and twigs
  • Cut back grass or vegetation if it has grown around the condenser
  • Visible signs of damage such as bent fins or rust
  • If the unit is visibly dirty, you can rinse it gently with a garden hose

4. Check Thermostat Settings

When was the last time you checked your thermostat, i.e. the brain behind your AC system? Here’s how to get it ready for cooling season:

  • Switch the thermostat from heating to cooling mode
  • Check that the thermostat is not in “fan only” mode
  • Check the batteries
  • Clean the interior of the unit if there is visible dust and dirt
  • Once the hot weather arrives, set it to 78°F for energy efficiency

5. Change the Rotation of Ceiling Fans

Did you know that you can adjust your ceiling fans to enhance your home comfort?

  • Ceiling fans rotate in two directions: clockwise and counterclockwise
  • Clockwise direction should be set for winter so that the fans can pull cool air up and redistribute the warm air that naturally rises
  • Counter-clockwise direction should be set for summer so the fan blades will push the air downward, making you feel cooler without having to lower the AC
  • This also circulates the cold air that your AC system generates throughout the room
